Dissertation is similar to thesis in many institutions. If you check the dictionary, the two are defined the same way. This presentation has pointed out a number of differences that you should know. Dissertations and thesis are categorized differently in different countries and institutions. The criterion used to assign the two differs depending on the requirements. In some countries, the two are similar while in others each has distinct qualities. A dissertation is examined at the doctorate level and thesis in the Masters level while in others the two are interchanged. The length of a dissertation and thesis vary depending on the requirements set by faculties and basing on the subject. Generally, a dissertation is longer and takes longer to complete compared to a thesis.  A dissertation can take roughly 100 to 300 pages while a thesis is just half that length, less than 100 pages.

A thesis therefore is shorter and consumes less amount of time.  In a thesis at the doctoral level, you must conduct independent research and it involves in depth analysis. It should contribute new knowledge and discoveries through original research and hypothesis.  A Masters thesis or dissertation on the other hand presents an analysis of previous work done by other writers. A dissertation uses already existing research to demonstrate new ways the knowledge can be used.
