SONET describe as a technology for carry many signals of different capacities throughout a synchronous flexible optical hierarchy. This is taken by means of a byte interleaved multiplexing scheme. Byte interleaving simplifies multiplexing and provides end to end network management.




The first process in the SONET multiplexing process involves the creation of the lowest level or base signal. In SONET this base signal is taken to as synchronous transport signal level. Simply STS 1 which performs at 51.84 mbps. Higher level signals are integer multiples of STS1 preparing the family of STS – N signals in table an STS- N signals is generated of N byte interleaved sTS-1 signals. This table also includes the optical counterpart for each STS- N signals prepared optical carrier level SDH shows a similar systems known as synchronous Transport module STM Is intended to be compatible with existing European hierarchies define as E line and with STS levels to this end the lowest STM level is known as 155.520 mbps. Which is exactly similar to STS-3.
