Newton’s first law of motion
defines that “an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in
motion with the same speed in the same direction unless acted upon by an
unstable force.” Objects tend to “keep on doing what they’re doing.” In fact,
it is the usual tendency of objects to decline to accept modification in their
state of motion. This tendency to oppose modification in their state of motion
is illustrated as inertia.
Inertia: the resistance an object
has to alter within its state of motion.
Newton’s first law of motion state
that force is NOT requires keeping a thing in motion. Slide a book across the
table and observe, it slide to a respite position. The book in action on the
tabletop do not come up to a rest point because of the lack of a force,
relatively it is the existence of a force – the force of resistance – that
fetches the book to a break position. In the deficiency of a force of friction,
the book would persist in motion with the equal speed and direction
perpetually. A force is not essential to keep a moving a book in action.
Moderately it is a force (i.e. force of friction) that transmits the book to
rest.
Mass as a Measure of the Amount of
Inertia
All objects oppose
modification in their state of motion because they have inertia. However some
objects have more of a tendency to resist changes than others. The tendency of
an object to resists changes in its state of motion varies with mass. Mass is
that quantity that is solely dependent upon the inertia of an object. The more
inertia that an object has, the greater its mass. A more massive object has a
greater tendency to resist changes in its state of motion.
Ex: suppose there are 2 bricks at rest on the table that look identical.
However one brick consists of gold and the other brick consists of Styrofoam.
Without lifting the bricks, you could tell which brick was the gold brick or
Styrofoam brick by giving the bricks an identical push in an effort to change
their state of motion. The brick that offers the least resistance is the brick
with the least inertia, and therefore the brick with the least mass – the
Styrofoam brick.
